TimelineJS is a free, open source tool that enables you to easily make timelines that work well on a desktop screen or mobile device. Originally designed for journalists, this tool would work equally well for students who want to create a timeline of an historical event.
This short tutorial explains how TimelineJS works:
- Create your spreadsheet-Build a new Google Spreadsheet using theTimelineJS template. Drop dates, text and links to media into the appropriate columns. Note: Don't change the column headers, don't remove any columns, and don't leave any blank rows in your spreadsheet.
- Publish to the web
- Copy/paste spreadsheet URL into the generator box at TimelineJS website.
- Embed theTimelineJS code into your website. Students may embed the code into their Google site.
You really have to see it in action to appreciate how fun and easy it is! Go to TimelineJS and give it a try.
TimelineJS was developed by former New York Times media producer, Zach Wise and Northwestern University's KnightNews Innovation Lab.
